  • Iridomyrmex purpureus colonies are known for their large, interconnected nests, which can cover extensive areas with networks of tunnels stretching up to 650 meters. These nests, built with gravel and dirt, can reach up to 1.5 meters in diameter and feature multiple entrances. The species is diurnal, tending to aphids for honeydew and traveling long distances to forage for food. They are omnivorous, consuming a varied diet that includes insects, meat, sugars, and seeds. Notably, these ants have a symbiotic relationship with certain butterfly caterpillars, providing protection in exchange for sugary fluids.
