  • Iberoformica subrufa colonies, with their size ranging from 5-6mm, thrive in forests with stone oaks and cork oaks, as well as secondary forests. They can even inhabit islands up to 1300 meters in the eastern French Pyrenees, particularly on rocky coasts. Adapted to high temperatures, these ants are often found in Spain and Portugal, where they exhibit unique behaviors to withstand heat stress. Workers keep their gaster elevated to withstand high temperatures and can run very fast to avoid burning their feet on hot soil. Colonies are monogynous, primarily feeding on insects and occasionally seeds, with their nuptial flight occurring in July.
