  • Myrmecocystus flaviceps lives in large underground nests, often in dry, sandy environments. These nests form crater-shaped mounds with wide entrance holes. One of the most remarkable aspects of this species is the development of repletes—special worker ants that hang from the ceiling of the nest chambers, storing sugary liquids in their bloated abdomens. These living storage tanks feed the colony during drought or food scarcity.

The species is nocturnal, foraging at night for nectar, honeydew from aphids, and small dead insects. Colonies can become quite large and active, particularly in well-established setups. Unlike many ant species, Myrmecocystus flaviceps does not require hibernation.
