Lasius niger
This well-known species of ant is found throughout Europe in both rural and urban areas. The Lasius niger can build their nests in many different places, from tree stumps and meadows to between paving stones and even in open forests and heathlands. In this colony, there is only one queen who lays the eggs, and she is often nearly twice the size of the workers.
Lasius flavus
This is perhaps the easiest ant species to keep for beginners. Lasius flavus ants are one the most common ants in Europe and they are quite shy. This ant species can have multiple egg-laying queens that are almost twice the size of the workers. This ant species is alot lighter than Lasius niger ants, for example.
Messor barbarus
Prefer to buy some less local ants? Then the ant species Messor barbarus might be something for you as a starter. This ant species comes from southwestern Europe and is quite common there. The reason is that these ants love the heat and thus the southern European climate. Here they nest under rocks and in sandy areas. Also in this colony there is only one egg-layingqueen. In this ant species, you have not only workers, but also majors and soldiers.
Extra: Camponotus nicobarensis
For a more exotic specimen, choose the Camponotus nicobarensis ants. This ant species is beautiful to watch because they have beautiful colors and large majors in their colony. It is a tropical species, so they like extra warmth.
